Alcatraz Versus the Scrivener's Bones by Brandon Sanderson

Alcatraz versus the Scrivener’s Bones, by Brandon Sanderson, reviewed by Kathy Thornhill, Children’s Librarian, Zauel Memorial Library
(Scholastic, 2008, 322 pages, $16.99)
Recommended for grades 4-6

Alcatraz and his band of insurgents continue the fight against the Cult of Evil Librarians (including his mother, Shasta) at the Library of Alexandria, where grandpa Leavenworth and father Attica are imprisoned. Alcatraz, cousins Bastille and Australia, and Uncle Kazan outwit the undead, soul-stealing wraiths who are curators of the library, as well as the Scrivener’s Bones, a half human, half machine mercenary charged with destroying the Smedrys and stealing their magical lenses.

Sanderson balances absurdity, action and character growth with slapstick humor and sarcastic wit in this fantasy sequel to Alcatraz versus the Evil Librarians.
