HOw Football Explains America
How Football Explains America, by Sal Paolantonio, reviewed by John Sheridan, Local History and Genealogy Collection, Hoyt Library
(Triumph Books c2008; 211 pp; $24.95)
This great little book doesn’t back down from the premise that Americans love football because the game is our reflection in the mirror of who we are. The hero as leader becomes the quarterback, the struggles of a nation is defined by the first down rule and achieving your goal is the touchdown. How did military parlance get into the game? What quarterback personified the Silent Majority? Does football explain America and Americans? Read the book and see. Highly recommended.
