Into the Deep by Karsten Schneider and Peter Batson

Into the Deep, by Karsten Schneider and Peter Batson, reviewed by Kate Tesdell, Hoyt Library
(Quercus, 2008, 224 pages, $14.99)

More humans have been to the moon than have been to the deepest part of the ocean. This fantastic journey begins at the water’s edge and ends more than 10,000 meters below the surface, exploring the strange and miraculous creatures that inhabit the blue realm.

While the text is fascinating (did you know that the Maori Octopus has an independent brain in each arm?) the real standouts in this oversized book are the remarkable photographs on every page.

Since barely 5% of the ocean floor has been mapped in any detail, this is only the beginning. More wonders await discovery.
