Bedtime at the Swamp by Kristyn Crow
Bedtime at the Swamp, by Kristyn Crow, reviewed by Kathy Thornhill, Children’s Librarian, Zauel Memorial Library
(Harpercollins, 2008, $16.99, unpaged)
Recommended for grades preschool-1st.
Just before bedtime, a boy was “sittin’ by a swamp just hummin’ a tune,” when he heard “splish splash rumba rumba bim bam BOOM!” Hands shaking, heart racing, he leaped through marshes and sludgy slime chased by a monster. Safety is the branches of a willow tree—followed by siblings and cousins sent to fetch him home. Even the monster is frightened by the terrifying refrain. Ma to the rescue, all are sent home to splish splash in the tub; rumba rumba with toothbrushes; bim bam up the stairs and BOOM into bed.
Bedtime and monsters don’t go together, but the rhyming story, repetitive chorus, expressive artwork, clean lines and colors draw readers into this absurd bedtime story.
