Otis and Rae and the Grumbling Splunk by Laura Espinosa

Otis and Rae and the Grumbling Splunk, by Laura Espinosa, reviewed by Jennie Tuttle, Children’s Department, Wickes Library
(Houghton Mifflin, 2008, $12.95 unpaged) Recommended for ages 4-8.

On their first ever camping trip, fearless Rae and her best friend Otis have all the essentials, PB&B sandwiches, a campfire, a tent and stories about the animals in the woods including the grumbling splunk. Otis struggles with chirping crickets and scary stories echoing in his head while Rae slips quickly to sleep. Do grumbling splunks really exist? The bright cartoonish illustrations complementing this hilarious tale are sure to remind the reader of their own campfire stories.
