Students on Strike by John A. Stokes

Students on Strike: Jim Crow, Civil Rights, Brown and Me: A Memoir by John A. Stokes with Lois Wolfe and Herman Viola, reviewed by Rhonda Farrell-Butler, Children’s and Teens Services Coordinator
(National Geographic, 2008, 128 pages, $15.95)

Recommended for ages 10 and up

In 1951, a group of African-American high school students in Prince Edward County, VA went on strike to protest the terrible conditions at their segregated school. Their complaints eventually became part of the class-action-suit that resulted in the landmark Brown vs. Board of Education Supreme Court decision in 1954. This fascinating memoir by one of the strike’s leaders will inspire today’s activists. His inside account conveys the students’ determination, the skilled support and guidance from the NAACP legal consultants, and the pressures on the local African-American community that supported them -- with great courage -- in the Jim Crow South.
