Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely
Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions by Dan Ariely reviewed by Trish Burns, Library Director
(Harper, 2008, $25.95, 280 pages)
Why do we keep making the same wrong decisions when we know what the outcome will be? How come we can’t stick to our diet? Why do we value the same item more if we paid for it than if we got it for free? Author Dan Ariely is a behavioral economist who explains some of the factors that influence our decisions and keep us making irrational choices that are often based on emotion. The book is filled with enough research to make it ring with validity, yet the writing style is very accessible and interesting.
