Handsprings: Poems & Paintings by Douglas Florian

Handsprings: Poems & Paintings by Douglas Florian, reviewed by Laura Pache, Children’s Librarian, Butman-Fish Library
(Greenwillow Books, 2006, 48 pg., $15.99)

Recommended for children ages 5 to10 years

This poetry book is a breath of fresh air after a long winter. The 48 short poems provide a child’s experience of spring. These inspiring poems bid farewell to winter, contrast winter and spring, and then “Handsprings” a release of energy and spring fun. The watercolor and colored-pencil artwork show the enthusiasm of children in spring, running, looking face to face with a caterpillar, playing baseball, catching raindrops with the tongue, skate boarding and many more.
This is Florian’s last book in this seasonal series. Other books in the series include Summersaults, Autumnblings and Winter Eyes.
