Bill Mauldin by Todd DePastino

Bill Mauldin: A Life Up Front, by Todd DePastino, reviewed by Tom Birch, Branch Head, Zauel Memorial Library
(W. W. Norton & Co., 2008, 370 pages, $27.95)

Remember the “Willie and Joe” cartoons from World War II? This is a well-illustrated biography about the Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist for the Stars and Stripes who immortalized the image of the American soldier as a reluctant, weary, yet victorious warrior. Wounded at Cassino, Mauldin served with the Army’s 45th Division, which fought its way up the boot of Italy in 1943. Less well known were his acting with Audie Murphy in the 1951 movie, The Red Badge of Courage, political cartooning and activism at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and the Chicago Sun-Times, and his unsuccessful run for Congress in 1956.
