Elijah of Buxton, is the story of eleven-year-old Elijah Freeman. He is the first free-born child in the Canadian settlement of Buxton, a haven for run away slaves. Elijah uses both wit and skill to bring justice to the town’s corrupt preacher. He travels to American in pursuit of the preacher and discovers the horrors of a slave’s life. Elijah then realizes the value of his freedom and somehow must make it back home.
Children and adults will enjoy this award winning book. Christopher Paul Curtis brings history alive though both comedy and adventure. This book leaves you wanting more and hoping for a sequel.
