Groundhog Day! by Gail Gibbons
“Groundhog Day!” by Gail Gibbons, Laura Pache, Butman-Fish Library Children’s Librarian.
(Holiday House, 2007, 32 pages, $16.95)
Recommended for children 5 to 8 years
Colorful illustrations help to explain Groundhog Day. The book begins with a picture of a groundhog looking out of its burrow, and a family eagerly looking to see if it sees its shadow. A history of the holiday follows with an illustration showing people cleaning their house to get ready for a new beginning, the spring season. Clymer Freas is credited for naming the holiday in 1886. And, of course, Gobbler’s Knob just outside Punxsutawney, and Punxsutawney Phil couldn’t be left out. Groundhog facts and information abound. The book closes showing people today celebrating the holiday.
