Not a Box by Antoinette Portis
Not a Box, by Antoinette Portis, reviewed by Jennie Tuttle, Children’s Department, Wickes Library
(HarperCollins, 2006, $12.99,unpaged)
Recommended for ages 1-6.
In a time of lead paint worries, this book features a favorite childhood toy, a simple empty box. Through emphatic statements, a bunny insists that it does not have a box. Instead, the simplistic drawings in red over the black outline of the bunny and box demonstrate various adventures, from driving a racecar to fighting a high-rise fire to shooting off to the stars. Not a Box is a great reminder of the greatest childhood gift, imagination.
