The Cheese by Margie Palatini

The Cheese, by Margie Palatini, reviewed by Kathy Thornhill, Children’s Librarian, Zauel Memorial Library
(Katherine Tegan Books, 2007, unpaged, $16.99)
Recommended for grades K-4

Everybody remembers the song “The Farmer in the Dell?” Did you wonder what happened to that solitary hunk of cheddar? The Cheese begins at song’s end, with a hungry Rat wondering why that perfectly good cheese was wasting away because of a silly song. Dashing in for a bite, Rat is joined by Cat, Dog, Child, Mother and Farmer, all insisting the Cheese stands alone! Persuaded to change the cheese rule, they make a party of it, adding fruit, sausage and crackers. Folk art illustrations are rich with country colors. Animals are expressive and funny. Full song lyrics are included.
