Sleep, Black Bear, Sleep, by Jane Yolen

Sleep, Black Bear, Sleep, by Jane Yolen, reviewed by Laura Pache, Children’s Librarian, Butman-Fish Library
(HarperCollinsPublishers, 2007, unpaged, $15.99)
Recommended for children 3-6 years,

This picture book is busy putting little animals to bed for the winter. Yolen has written a lullaby for each of the hibernating animals including the bear, frog, bat, turtle, gopher, skunk, badger, beaver, mouse, toad, chipmunk, and even YOU--a little child with stuffed animals from the previous pages on her bed. Thanks to illustrator Brooke Dyer, each animal’s home is detailed and cozy. This is a nice way for young children to learn about some animals that hibernate.
