Mercy Watson: Princess in Disguise by Kate Di Camillo

Mercy Watson: Princess in Disguise, by Kate DiCamillo, reviewed by Linda Bryant, Hoyt Library Children’s Department
(Candlewick Press, 2007 $12.99, 70 pages)
Recommended for ages 6 – 8

Just in time for Halloween, author DiCamillo has penned a trick-or-treat romp for the beginning chapter book crowd. Mrs. Watson wanted very much to make a costume for Mercy, the pig. Mercy did not want to wear the beautiful princess dress and tiara very much at all, until she heard about the treats. Getting the treats Mercy imagined was not easy at all. But after a chase, a parade, and the fire department getting involved, everyone enjoyed large amounts of hot-buttered Halloween toast, Mercy’s favorite treat. Chris VanDusen’s hilarious illustrations perfectly capture the holiday fun.
