Big Smelly Bear by Britta Teckentrup

Big Smelly Bear, by Britta Teckentrup, reviewed Cheryl Kay, Hoyt Library, Children’s Department
(Boxer Books, 2007, $12.95, unpaged)
Recommended for ages 2 - 6.

This is a big, snuggly bedtime book about a bear, Big Smelly Bear, who refuses to brush his fur. He refuses to take a bath. It doesn’t really bother him that the other animals don’t want to be around him; except for the flies. One good whiff of him and they all run away. But that changes when Bear wakes up one morning with a terrible itch, an itch that he can not reach. No matter what he does, it just makes him want to scratch his itch even more. Then a big fluffy bear offers to scratch his back, on one condition. He has to take a bath!
