Ask Me No Questions, by Marina Budhos, reviewed Deborah Trombley, Reference and Teen Services Librarian Butman-Fish Library
(Atheneum Books 2007, 162 pages $16.95)
Recommended for ages 12-15.
Nadire, a 14-year-old immigrant from Bangladesh, tells the story of how her Muslim family is coping with the prejudice and fear of being unwanted in a place they call home. As part of a U. S. crackdown on illegal immigration after 9/11, Muslim men were required to register with the government and many were arrested because their visas had long-since expired. Following their father’s arrest, Nadire and her older sister, Aisha, need to make a case to the judge so that he sees their father as an individual not as a terrorist. Budhos addresses the human side to the many illegal immigrants targeted by the Patriot Act and Homeland Security issues.
