Grandfather's Dance, by Patricia MacLachlan

Grandfather’s Dance, by Patricia MacLachlan, reviewed by Brenda Rodammer, Hoyt Library
Joanna Colter Books, 2006, 84 pages, $14.99
Recommended for grades 3 - 6

Little Cassie Whiting, now a fourth-grader, narrates the story of her sister Anna’s impending wedding. Many relatives come, including the aunts, who are fun-loving characters. The characters who stand out the most are Grandfather and little Jack, or doggie as he likes to be called. Jack, Cassie’s little brother, looks up to Grandfather and imitates him as toddlers love to do with a grown-up they admire.

These are both happy and sad times as Cassie and Grandfather think of her future wedding and the realization that he probably won’t be there. Grandfather’s ultimate gift to Cassie and the rest of the clan, a dance, helps them to find peace after a sad turn of events. This book is the conclusion of the Sarah, Plain and Tall stories and is a must-read for any young girl that has enjoyed this saga.
