Amy by Mary Hooper
Amy, by Mary Hooper, reviewed by Kathy Thornhill, Children’s Librarian, Zauel Memorial Library
(Bloomsbury, 2002, $6.95, 170 pages) Recommended for grade 6 and up.
Amy had a falling out with her friends. Lonely, she visits a chat room and meets Zed, who claims to be 18 and a sales manager. Against her parents’ wishes, she joins Zed for a seaside picnic. After eating, Amy is sleepy, waking just in time to catch the train home. Later, she finds her shirt on backward, and flashbacks to Zed undressed. While determining what happened during her lost hours, she finds Zed’s image does not match reality.
In this time of cyber-friendships where one can create any identity, Amy gives young people something to consider. Amy is the 2007 Saginaw Township Schools Community Read
