Nobody Gonna Turn Me 'Round by Doreen Rappaport

Nobody Gonna Turn Me ‘Round: Stories and Songs of the Civil Rights Movement by Doreen Rappaport, reviewed by Cheryl Kay, Children’s Department, Hoyt Library
Candlewick Press, 2006, $19.99, 63 pg.
Recommended for 8 years and older.

This is the final book in the trilogy of the African-American experience written by Rappaport and artist Shane W. Evans. These are the true stories of crusaders of equality and peace. There are stories about Rosa Parks who would not give up her seat, of Fannie Lou Hamer whose life dream was to vote, and of Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth who campaigned to desegregate stores in downtown Birmingham.
There are stories of sit-ins and marches, of triumphs, and how spiritual hymns were rewritten to fit each situation. These songs united Americans in affirming their determination in fighting for the rights of freedom and equality.
