Gossamer, by Lois Lowry
Gossamer, by Lois Lowry, reviewed by Neica Dey,Hoyt Library, Children’s Services
(Walter Lorraine Books, 2006, 140 pages, $16.00)
Recommended for ages 10 and up
Lowry has created a compelling fantasy world, one that functions while humans sleep. Benevolent beings called dream-givers handle personal objects and gather happy memories from a particular person in order to return them as peaceful dreams. The terrifying sinisteeds, beasts that inflict despairing nightmares, are at war with these delicate creatures.
Themes of good and evil, the importance of memory, and the power of love are explored as Gossamer, a tiny dream-giver in training battles the sinisteeds and helps a troubled foster child, his struggling mother, and a lonely old woman find peace through their dreams.
Gossamer is a lyrical and poetic novel with compelling characters and an intriguing plot.
