Broadcasts from the Blitz, by Philip Sieb

Broadcasts from the Blitz: How Edward R. Murrow Helped Lead America Into War, by Philip Seib, reviewed by Tom Birch, Zauel Library
(Potomac Books, Washington D.C., 2006, 209 pages, $24.95)

In 1937 Ed Murrow arrived in England where he assumed control of CBS’s European operations, witnessing first-hand the coming of war to Britain, and especially the intense bombing of London by the Nazis during 1940 and 1941.

Instantaneous and far-reaching, radio journalism was coming of age. Murrow took his microphone out into the streets and up on to rooftops where listeners heard the actual sounds of sirens, antiaircraft fire, and bomb blasts.

This book describes the crucial role Murrow played in rallying an isolationist America to come to the aid of Britain in their struggle with Germany.
