The American Story by Jennifer Armstrong

The American Story: 100 True Tales from American History,
by Jennifer Armstrong, reviewed by Linda Bryant,Children’s Supervisor
Hoyt Library
Knopf, 2006 $34.95 374 pages
Recommended for Families and Children Ages 10 and Up

This splendid volume recounts the history of America in 100 true tales. The stories are as interesting and varied as our country itself, ranging from triumph to tragedy to invention to sporting achievement. The struggle for freedom, in its many forms, is a recurring theme as well. Illustrator Roger Roth’s fine drawings capture the flavor of the stories, whether in spot vignettes or full page spreads. The American Story is perfect for family read-alouds and for making history so much more than lists of dull names and dates.
