A Fire in My Hands: Poems by Gary Soto
A Fire in My Hands: Poems by Gary Soto, reviewed by Rhonda Farrell-Butler, Coordinator Children’s and Teen Services
(Harcourt, Inc. 2006, $16.00, 74 pages)
Recommended for 6th grade and up
Since his visit to Saginaw a few years ago, Gary Soto has become one of my favorite poets. His chatty introduction and his free-verse selections about belching root beer; instructions on the proper way to eat Mexican Food, and Saturday at the Canal, are just a few of the works you will find in this collection of poetry. As always, his poems are direct, humorous and serve as a conversation piece about growing up. Creative writing teachers will also find this a gem for demonstrating the genesis of a poem.
