Yellow Star by Jennifer Roy, Reviewed by Linda Bryant, Hoyt Library Children’s Department Supervisor
Marshall Cavendish, 2006 $16.95 227 pages
Recommended for grades 6 – 8
This story is based on the real life of the author’s aunt, Syvia Perlmutter. In 1939, the Germans invaded Poland. The Jewish inhabitants of the town of Lodz were moved into a sealed-off section of the city called the ghetto. Of 270,000 people forced into the ghetto, only about 800 survived to be liberated in 1945. Of those survivors, only twelve were children. Syvia Perlmutter was one of them.
Told in a child’s voice as events unfold, the hardship, heroism, and heartbreak of those five and one-half years are made accessible to middle grade readers. This moving tale honors the strength of the human spirit and ordinary courage in the face of an impossible situation.
