I'm a Michigan Kid! by Gary Bower

I’m a Michigan Kid!: An Artistic Tour of the Great Lakes State,
by Gary Bower, reviewed by Neica Dey
Hoyt Library, Children’s Dept.
Storybook Meadow Publishing, $17.99, 48 pages, 2005
Recommended for ages 5-8

Michigan natives Gary and Jan Bower have created a beautiful tribute to our pleasant peninsulas filled with fun facts and gorgeous paintings. Rhyming text details aspects of the state from “Marquette to Monroe.” The exceptional artwork perfectly captures the quintessential beauty of Michigan. State symbols, song, and pledge of allegiance are appended.

The kid-capturing highlights are the added sidebars written by actual Michigan kids – twenty-two in all. Each child elaborates on the facts presented in the text and paintings, and describes what they love best about their state. Their views are insightful and the children reflect the diversity of Michigan’s population.
