The search for similarities among music and mathematics may be as futile as
discovering a correlation between the position of Jupiter relative to Saturn
and high gas prices, however, Edward Rothstein insists on persuading the
reader that music and mathematics are quite related. He informs the reader
to look at mathematics as an art and to view music as a science. He points
out that musicians use musical notation to represent pitch and tempo the
same way a mathematician might use symbols to indicate an arithmetic
operations. Also, mathematics plays an important role in the physics of
musical sound.
