Sixth Man by Chris Palmer
Sixth Man: A Season Inside the NBA Playground, by Chris Palmer, reviewed by Bill O'Brien. ESPN Books 2006, $22.95, 213 pages
ESPN writer Palmer goes behind the scenes during the 2004-2005 NBA season, and follows NBA players including Elton Brand of the Clippers and Rip Hamilton of the Pistons. The author spends time with players at games, in nightclubs and restaurants, and even hangs out in with Hamilton and his Coatesville friends in Rip's home barbershop.
The result is a glimpse into the players’ lives beyond the sports babble fans usually hear. Palmer spends a day being driven around LA by Elton Brand and visiting his recording studio.
The season on the court is memorable too. The infamous Pistons Pacers brawl, Reggie Miller’s retirement, and the Finals showdown between the Spurs and Pistons.
