Reshaping Reason: Toward a New Philosophy, by John McCumber, reviewed by Sean Anderson, Claytor Library
Indiana University Press, 2005,$25.00, 263 pgs.
ISBN: 0-253-34503-0
John McCumber argues that the condition of philosophy in the Western world is in decline. Split between the analytical and continental factions, modern Philosophers are in disagreement about how the profession should continue. Early philosophers (such as Plato) believed that the "truth" could be discovered by pure arguments; however the rise of science tossed the argumentative approach in the back seat. Consequently, modern philosophers must find new tools to help them in the pursuit of their goals. Logic, together with other useful tools, can greatly enhance the future of philosophy. This is a recommended read for those interested in humanity.
