Riding Rockets: the Outrageous Tales of a Space Shuttle Astronaut, by Mike Mullane
Riding Rockets: the Outrageous Tales of a Space Shuttle Astronaut, by Mike Mullane, reviewed by Paul Lutenske, Branch Head,Butman-Fish Library (
Scribner, 2006, $26.00, 368 pp)
USAF Colonel Mullane served as one of the original thirty-five space shuttle astronauts. After briefly touching on his childhood and pre-astronaut life, we are treated to an inside look at the extreme highs, equally extreme lows, and most points in-between in the life of a shuttle astronaut. We also get an interesting behind-the-scenes look at how NASA worked; or didn’t. For any reader, this is an always fascinating, frequently humorous, sometimes heart-wrenching, and extremely well-written look at this astoundingly hazardous yet rewarding calling. For those of us who stayed home from school “sick” in order to watch space launches or landings on TV, it’s a must-read.
