Grimm's Grimmest by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm

Grimm's Grimmest, by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, reviewed by Bruce Armstrong, Claytor Library (Chronicle Books, 2005, $22.95) 142 pgs.

Beware! This is not just another edition of Grimm's fairytales. These are newly translated versions of the original Nursery and Household Tales as published by the Brothers Grimm in 1822. They include interesting illustrations by Tracy Dockray, which help capture the essence of these tales. No one in their right mind would tell a preschooler any of these tales in today's world. They are filled with maimings, murder, mutilations, cannibalism, and other assorted terrors. Like our contemporary urban legends, these tales mirror the hidden fears and secret desires of the people who first heard them two hundred years ago.
