Show Way by Jacqueline Woodson
Show Way by Jacqueline Woodson, reviewed by Cheryl Kay, Hoyt Library Children's Department
G. P. Putnam’s Son’s, 2005, $16.99, (unpaged)
Recommended for ages 8 -12.
“Show Ways,” or quilts, was used as secret maps to freedom during the days of slavery. The cut pieces showed stars, moons, and roads of the “Trail to the North” for the slaves to follow. The author tells the reader how the skill of making these maps and the telling of their stories was passed down from mother to daughter in her family. With the help of the illustrator’s colorful pictures, Woodson’s words show the love, pride, and talents of each generation’s Show Ways. And how each mother whispers to her daughter the story that came before her.
