Distilling Knowledge: Alchemy, Chemistry, and the Scientific Revolution by Bruce T. Moran

Distilling Knowledge: Alchemy, Chemistry, and the Scientific Revolution by Bruce T. Moran, reviewed by Sean Anderson, Claytor Library
Harvard University Press, 2005, 210 pgs. $25.00
ISBN: 0-674-01495-2

Bruce Moran does an excellent job of introducing and explaining some the ideas that sparked the Scientific Revolution in his book Distilling Knowledge. Alchemy, although an archaic philosophy at the time, was the root of many scientific subjects of today, namely chemistry. Philosopher Paracelsus during the 16th century mentioned that all organs in the body had an "archeus" or "inner alchemist" that served to guide the function of each one and that it was important to understand how the "inner alchemist" works(p. 74); the basis of modern medicine. Each fact is referenced and the book includes an excellent index.
